READING BUDDIES

  • A group of Year 7 pupils with significantly below chronological reading ages were identified in the Autumn term
  • AR Star Reading Test indicated that 21 pupils had reading ages between 6 years and 9 years
  • Each pupil was paired with a Year 10 Reading Buddy
  • Year 10 Reading buddies took part in training to enable them to effectively support their partner in improving reading and comprehension skills
  • Reading Buddies sessions take place every Monday morning
  • The sessions ran during the Autumn term and first Spring term – a total of 5 months.
IMPACT

INTERVENTION:

What were the measurable outcomes in terms of data?

READING BUDDIES:

  • 72% of the Year 7 target group made an average increase of 13 months in a 5 month period when re- tested .
  • 50% made between one year plus, up to 3 years 1 month in 5 months.
  • Those that did not progress did not attend regularly.
IMPACT CONCLUSIONS

INTERVENTION:

Additional support one to one increases confidence , amount read and time to discuss supports comprehension .

READING BUDDIES:

Early intervention with those pupils who do not attend the Reading Buddies sessions regularly – pupils who are not in the pattern of attending on a weekly basis do not benefit in the same way as those who fully take part in the intervention

  • Increase number to 25
  • Names re issued to form teachers
  • Look again to recruit and train a Year 9 group to increase number supported below chronological age
