Why Homework Matters

Homework strengthens learning long after the lesson has ended. Regular practice helps pupils remember more, build confidence, and develop independence. When parents offer gentle structure at home, pupils make better progress and develop strong study habits.

How to support your child with their homework.

• Routine: Set a consistent time and quiet space for homework.
• Environment – provide a quiet, distraction-free space and keep phone, games and TV away.
• Check ClassCharts daily with your child. All homework will be posted on Class Charts.
• Promote good study habits – Help them organise their folder or exercise books weekly and support them to spend the appropriate time on each task, neither rushing nor over-working.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7 – 9)

English: Encourage reading, discuss ideas aloud, check spelling and punctuation.

Maths: Ask them to explain one problem, use Sparx/MathsWatch videos, show working out.

Science: Make flashcards, use quizzes, ask them to teach a concept.

Humanities: Use timelines, retrieval questions, and short paragraphs.

MFL: Test vocabulary, practise speaking aloud.

Creative Subjects: Support planning, discuss sketchbook ideas, allow rehearsal.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 – 11)

English: Use revision guides, test quotes, plan essays.

Maths: Support exam-style questions, rewatch teaching videos, practise formulas.

Science: Flashcards, quizzes, accurate vocabulary, explain processes.

Humanities: Review knowledge organisers, practise PEEL paragraphs, make quizzes.

MFL: Test vocabulary and tenses, practise short speaking answers.

Practical Subjects: Schedule coursework time, record progress, rehearse little and often.
