The Governing Body members

The Governors critically review the work and effectiveness of the school. This includes looking at exam results, progress grades, attendance and behaviour data, as well as other ‘soft’ data around the working of the school and everyday life. The Governors ask questions and pose challenges to the Senior Leadership Team when they consider that results or other indicators are not of a high enough standard.

The Governors regularly review the progress of the school budget to ensure that there is sufficient funding available for the priorities of teaching and provision of text books etc., while at the same time ensuring that the school can afford staff that it employs.

Each year the Governing Body works with the Senior Leadership Team to identify the priorities for the school improvement over the next couple of years, as well as to review the progress made in meeting the previous year’s objectives.

The full Governing Body meets every half term. Most of the meeting is spent discussing the Headteacher’s report regarding a number of key areas of work in the school, and examining how effectively the school is operating in these areas. In addition the Governing Body has three committees which meet on a termly basis and deal with specific items such as progress grades, the school budget, staff employment policies and staffing structure.

Many of the Governors are current or former parents of the school. You will meet Governors at school events, e.g. drama productions, music concerts, sports fixtures etc. You may also know some of the Governors through your children and their friends. Usually at least two members of the Governing Body are present at every Parents Evening.

In addition each year Governors choose a random group of parents with whom to hold an open discussion regarding their views on the school and its effectiveness. If you are invited to one of these groups please do attend and share your views.

You may want to contact the Governors if

you have particular views regarding the strategic direction of the school. It may be that you feel confidently that the school should proceed in a specific direction or else should avoid a particular approach; or
you have a complaint which has not been resolved through the normal complaints procedure (details of which you can find on the school website).

Although Governors are aware of the parental survey that is carried out at parents’ evening, they are always keen to hear the views of parents regarding the performance and direction of the school.

I am an Accountant by trade and until recently was Managing Director at a small Engineering Company based in Helsby.  My interest in education has grown over the last 10 years through two influences:

• I have a son in school so I have a vested interest!
• I am a big believer in the value that young people can bring to a workplace and I established an award winning apprenticeship scheme at my last company that led me to connect with a number of high schools in the area.

I was a Parent Governor at my son’s Primary School for 4 years and was co-opted as a Weaverham Governor in July 2021.  My main role will be to use my training to help ensure that the school finances continue to be well managed and I will also take a keen interest in everything the school does to prepare students for the next steps beyond Weaverham High School

 

Joanne Parry – Co-Chair 

I am a former student of Weaverham High School attending from 1984-86 before relocating to the North-East. I studied Psychology at Newcastle Upon Tyne University before moving back to the local area.  I now live in Acton Bridge with my husband and two daughters who attend WHS.

I am an HR Business Partner for Sales & Marketing, in the Construction industry.  I have a keen interest in the learning, development, and employee wellbeing side of my role.

I feel very privileged at being elected as a co-opted Governor in 2021 and very excited by the opportunity to use my skills and experience to support this fantastic school that is always striving to be better, to enable the students to fulfil their dreams and achieve their best outcomes.

In my spare time, I enjoy running, gardening and the odd glass of wine!

I started my professional career as a Teacher of English at the (then) Leftwich High School as it became a Comprehensive 11-16 school. During that time, I was also a Teacher Governor for three years. I taught all age groups and abilities and thoroughly enjoyed my time as a teacher.

Having taken a different career path, joining my husband in establishing our Electrical Contracting company (Monitor Systems Ltd) I still maintained my interest in teaching and joined in with school activities whilst our children were young.

When an opportunity arose at Weaverham High School I was pleased to be elected as a Parent Governor, and I have served on the Governing Body for over 20 years. Having been co-opted as a Community representative rather than a Parent Governor, I later became Chair of the Curriculum Committee.

Since then I have served as Vice Chair for many years and have been Chair of Governors for ten years until stepping down from this role last academic year, again serving as Vice Chair.

In the current academic year, as part of our succession planning, I have stepped down from Vice Chair and have taken the role of Chair of the Quality of Education Committee.

I am very proud to have been part of the continuing development and success of Weaverham High School.

I work at the Environment Agency in a leadership role, and have two children at Weaverham High School.

I became a Parent Governor to help me understand the High School system, and to give something back to our community.

I bring a passion in all things sustainability and leadership, which has resulted in me working with the school as Sustainability Governor, alongside my role on the Behaviour & Personal Development Committee.
